Upwork Connects are the credits you spend to send a proposal. Each one costs $0.15, and a single proposal usually takes several. On their own they look cheap. The real cost only shows up when you count the proposals that don't win.

How Connects add up

Every job post shows how many Connects a proposal needs. Popular categories and larger jobs often ask for more. If a proposal takes 16 Connects, it costs $2.40 to send, whether or not you win.

So the useful number is the cost per job won: proposals sent to win one job × Connects per proposal × $0.15. At a 1 in 20 win rate, that is 20 proposals for every job.

A $1,000 job that took 20 proposals of 16 Connects
  1. Service fee

    $1,000.00 × 10%equals$100.00

  2. Connects

    20 proposals × 16 × $0.15equals$48.00

  3. Take-home

    $1,000.00 − $100.00 − $48.00 − $2.00equals$850.00

Connects cost $48 here, which pushes the real cost of this job from 10% to 15%. On a smaller job, the same $48 would take a much bigger share.

How to spend fewer Connects

  • Apply to fewer, better-matched jobs. Doubling your win rate halves the Connects cost of every job you win.
  • Apply early. Proposals sent in the first hours after a job is posted tend to get more attention.
  • Skip jobs with vague budgets and many applicants. They cost the same Connects but win less often.
  • Track your win rate for a month, then enter it in the calculator so your rate covers what winning work really costs.

Tip: Treat Connects as a sales cost. Add them to your price the same way you add the service fee, not as a small expense to ignore.
