Adding up a week of clock-in and clock-out times by hand is slow and easy to get wrong, especially with breaks and shifts that don't start on the hour. This timesheet totals each day and the week in hours and minutes and in decimal hours, and works out pay with an overtime threshold, for employees checking a payslip or freelancers preparing an invoice.
How it works
Each day's time is the end time minus the start time, minus the unpaid break. 9:00 to 17:30 with a 30-minute break is 8 hours. A shift that ends after midnight, such as 22:00 to 06:00, is counted as running into the next day.
The weekly total is shown in hours and minutes and in decimal hours, because payroll and invoices use decimals: 37h 45m is 37.75 hours, not 37.45.
Pay is regular hours × your rate, plus overtime hours × your rate × the overtime multiplier. Overtime rules differ by country and contract; many use hours over 40 in a week at 1.5×, but some count daily overtime instead, so set the threshold to match yours.

A worked example
The example week: Monday 9:00–17:30 with a 30-minute break is 8h, then 7h 45m, 8h 40m, 7h and 6h 20m. The week totals 37h 45m, or 37.75 decimal hours. At $25 an hour with overtime after 40 hours, pay is $943.75, all at the regular rate.

How do I calculate hours worked in a day?
Subtract the start time from the end time and take off any unpaid break. 8:45 to 17:15 is 8 hours 30 minutes; minus a 45-minute break, it's 7 hours 45 minutes.
How do I convert hours and minutes to decimal hours?
Divide the minutes by 60 and add them to the hours. 7h 45m is 7 + 45 ÷ 60 = 7.75 hours.
Are breaks paid?
It depends on local law and your contract. Enter only unpaid break time in the break column; paid breaks should be left in as working time.
How is overtime calculated?
Commonly as hours over a weekly threshold, such as 40, paid at a multiple like 1.5×. Some places use daily thresholds or different multipliers, so check your contract or local labour rules.
Can I use this for night shifts?
Yes. If the end time is earlier than the start time, the shift is treated as ending the next day, so 22:00 to 06:00 counts as 8 hours before breaks.
