The Business Math Toolkit: Prices, Margins and Money

Most business decisions come down to a handful of calculations done correctly: the margin a price leaves, the tax inside a total, how many sales cover your costs, and what a loan or subscription really costs over time.

The traps are well known. A 50% markup is a 33% margin, removing 20% VAT isn't taking 20% off, and two discounts don't add up. These calculators get them right and show why.

  1. Percentages and pricing

    Changes, conversions, margins and discounts.

  2. Tax and break-even

Add or remove sales tax, and find the sales volume that covers your costs.

  3. Borrowing and saving

Loan instalments and total interest, and how savings grow.

  4. Costs of running a team

Software spend, return on tools, and the real cost of employees versus contractors.

Questions people ask

What's the difference between margin and markup?

Markup is profit as a share of cost; margin is profit as a share of price. A $100 item sold for $150 has a 50% markup but a 33.3% margin.

Do these calculators work in my currency?

Yes. Most tools have a currency selector and remember your choice. Country tax tools always use their own currency.

Can I save or share a result?

Every calculator can copy your results, download them as a CSV, print to PDF or give you a link that reopens the tool with your numbers.
